What can I say about Rome that hasn't been said before...pretty much nothing...which of course will not stop me. From what I understand Rome is the originator of the grid system of roads. Interestingly I didn't actually see evidence of this in Rome...or in the rest of Italy. In fact, order is quite the opposite to anything I actually saw in the roadways of Italy. Rome of course did a huge amount of expansion throughout Europe. I have a theory that this was actually to get away from Italian drivers. Sadly all evidence that would prove my theory seems to have been suppressed.

Rome is just littered with piles of historical bits all over the place. Every time they dig a hole they dig up some new and exciting 2000 year old thing....and suddenly it's an excavation site. If I were a betting woman I would say this is aggravating as hell to the people who started digging the holes so they could build a new shed.

You don't have to be religious to know that Rome is also the home of the Vatican City. My first view of the Vatican was having to wade thru wet garbage. I feel the need to point out how I was surprised by the mess and that I had expected the Vatican to be like God's Disneyland...cleanliness is apparently not as close to Godliness as we have been led to believe. Walt would never let Disneyland get that messy!
